Vernon and Libby Pruett spent the last 20 years of their lives in this historic home—once dubbed “Eureka’s Only Mansion.” In 2005, Libby Joan Pruett, one of six Pruett daughters, bought the house and began an extensive renovation. Through the vision, artistic talents, and expertise of Troy and Sarita Welch (also one of the daughters), owners of Shake-It Enterprises, the house has become a beautiful bed and breakfast, even nicer than ever envisioned by its original and subsequent owners.

Construction of the structure was started in 1908 and completed in 1913. The house abounds with interesting, antique features, from the huge wood-burning furnace in the basement, around which the house had to be built (now bypassed in favor of central heat and A/C), to two sets of eight-foot-wide pocket doors leading to the dining room and living room, to a beadboard attic spanning the width of the house. Though the house has passed through the hands of several owners throughout its 100-year history, it has retained many of its original details. Most of the original glass window panes remain, as do the striking pocket doors, built-in cabinets in the dining room, alabaster light fixtures, wall sconces, and skirted tub (now refinished). The six-panel doors and wainscoating remain, but have been carefully sanded, re-stained, and refinished.
There are three guest rooms: The “Libby,” named after the family matriarch, is now an elegant, relaxing retreat for travelers and honeymooners. Most guests need a step stool to climb onto the high king-size bed. The adjoining private bath boasts a corner jetted tub big enough for two and a separate, granite-walled shower.
The “Griff,” affectionately given the former owner’s nickname, has been meticulously given a level of detail he would never have imagined, including an elegant four-poster, king-sized bed. An adjacent bedroom has been converted into a spacious private bath with a skirted tub, original to the house, as well as a separate corner shower.
The “Sisters,” occupied by several of the sisters and their offspring over the years, is now decorated with an Oriental theme (“East Meets West”). The room has twin beds and a separate paneled study with a day bed, as well as a private bathroom with a slipper tub.
The 1908 Pruett House is an excellent venue for social events of all kinds, such as weddings, reunions, anniversary parties, receptions, and business meetings.
