Officially established in the spring of 1996, the Scraps and Threads Quilt Guild has grown from a small handful of like-minded ladies to over 50 members. Its growth is due mainly to the renewed interest in the art of quilt making. Its members come from as far away as Texas, the West Kootenai and the Flathead Valley and range in age from not old enough to vote to been there-done that. Skill levels also range from beginners to professional quilt makers. There is definitely a plethora of knowledge and ability within this local Guild.
Quilting was quickly becoming a lost art, as most people in todays fast-paced society seldom have time to sit and sew pieces of fabric together for a quilt, especially when regular blankets are so cheap to buy and are readily available at the local department store. But interest began to rise as more and more people needed a restful hobby to help them relax from their hard days work. Today, quilts grace the walls as well as the beds, giving a relaxed, homey feel to even the most modern décor.
The purpose of the Scraps and Threads Quilt Guild is to create, stimulate and maintain an interest in making, collecting and preserving quilts. The Guild meets once a month on the second Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Eureka. Members are encouraged to bring their sewing machines and enjoy the day working on a project or learning something new. A potluck style luncheon is provided by a team of members that changes every month. Membership dues of $20 are collected each May, but new members are encouraged to sign up no matter the date. The Guild also welcomes visitors, so stop by and see what theyre doing.
The Guild sponsors extra classes to teach new techniques taught by both local and professional quilt makers throughout the year, as well as workshops where they get together on a different day to work on special projects. In addition, the Guild sponsors an Annual Quilt Show every year in conjunction with the Rendezvous.
The Guild also participates in fund-raisers and makes a number of charity quilts each year for Project Linus, We Care, the Race For A Cure and the Louise Burk Memorial luncheon. Special prayer quilts are also made for members or family of members who are ill or have lost a loved one, and are signed by each contributing member.
As 2010 quickly approaches, the Guild is looking forward to its annual show at the next Rendezvous with enthusiasm.
The Guild is very pleased to include the public in voting Peoples Choice for the top three places and the best theme quilt. They are also happy to provide free admission to all who come to view the quilts. Be sure to mark your calendars for April 23, 24 and 25, 2010 cause this is an event you wont want to miss.
