Eureka Christian School began in a church basement in 1993. Today, after two moves, a school merger, and a name change, the school is located two miles north of Eureka on Highway 93 North.
ECS is a 501(c)3, non-profit organization that depends on tuition, fundraising, and donations. The school is non-denominational and is operated under the leadership of a seven-member board that is made up of parents, local church leaders, and business owners.
New to Eureka Christian School this year is teacher Sharlotte Brown and principal Bonita Bontrager. Bontrager, recently graduated from University of Montana in Dillon, has brought a fresh perspective and leadership to the school.
“Her new ideas and her new ways of working with the kids are very exciting,” said school secretary Martha Chupp. “They click very well, her and the students. She has a way of relating to the kids on an individual level – and they all like her.”
ECS presently has 28 students enrolled in the classes offered this year: pre-school to 12th grade. With five full-time teachers, the class sizes are small and the school has a small country schoolhouse feel. The family-like atmosphere encourages learning and individual attention, and several volunteer teachers – mostly parents – bring extracurricular subjects like music and art into the mix.
Each child is cared for and encouraged to grow in book knowledge and in Christ. ECS uses Christian-based textbooks and emphasizes high-quality education with an emphasis on acquiring thinking skills along with subject knowledge.
