Mike Marvel started building and repairing fences when he was a kid on the family ranch down on the Kootenai River at the mouth of Pinkham Creekâ now under the waters of Lake Koocanusa.
Marvel later worked in the logging industry for many years, mostly felling timber, and built fences, mainly during the spring of the year when the woods were shut down for breakup.
When the timber industry went south, Marvel began building fences full time. He acquired a skidsteer with a post driver and augers which enables him to drive a post up to six and a half inches in diameter and ten feet tall. He can also auger holes up to twelve inches in diameter.
Marvel builds most all kinds of fence, including stock wire fences, rail fences, jack leg, corrals, chain link and vinyl. He also builds tall deer fences around gardens and orchards, plus various styles of dog enclosures.
The ground in the Tobacco Valley consists of glacial till with very little top soil. It is without a doubt amongst the hardest and rockiest soil anywhere in the country. Marvel has the equipment and the know how to build fences in this type of ground.
